The New Girl

Wednesday, September, 3, 2008

Hello skirt.com reader!

As a new blogger for skirt, I think an awkward introduction post is in order.

My name is Kelly aminiature floridakellynd I live in Jacksonville. When someone asks me how old I am, I always have to do the math. I’m 23.

Since 18 of those 23 years were spent going to school, I have a pretty short biography. I was born in NeptuneBeach and lived there until I was 18. Then I went off to central Florida for college to become a stage manager for the theatre. About half-way through that endeavor, I realized that I’d rather be a writer, so I finished school with a degree in theatre and a degree in literature.

I went straight from undergrad into grad school. This was a mistake. I got half-way through (see a trend?) pursuing a master’s in nonfiction writing. The problem is, you have to write a creative thesis to earn an MFA and, having only ever really gone to school, I honestly didn’t have much to write about.

So in April I moved back to Jacksonville—this time to Riverside.

I’m pretty good at school; now I’m trying my hand at real life.

I work at a local, small-batch bakery which is owned and operated by a wonderful and amazing woman. I am one of three employees and we’re all young women, so it’s a decidedly pro-female atmosphere.

I am also a freelance writer. If someone is willing to pay me for it, I am willing to write just about anything. So when I’m not baking, I am writing.

I live with a bulldog named Hector, a giant cat named Otto, and a boyfriend named Jonathan. I am used to living alone with the cat, so my move since April has taken some getting used to. There are definite pros and cons to living with my boyfriend (pro: Jonathan is a carpenter, so we get beautiful, free furniture; con: there are currently five of Jonathan’s tables cluttering up our living room… who needs five tables in one room?!).

Overall, I try to enjoy life, take care of my body, love the people around me, and try not to get too stressed out.

A small batch bakery is exactly what it sounds like. We do everything by hand and make things one batch at a time. We mostly do sweets and we're located in the strip of shops on St. Johns Ave in Avondale. Give me a holler if you're stopping by!

Haha, well I've got pictures of our extras and I could email them to you if you'd like to take a look at them! If they don't work for what you're looking for, Jonathan can always whip up something different. It would be such a relief to get some of this extra furniture out of here...
