I’ve been watching the news a lot more lately – mostly because of the storms – but last night right after the weather, they moved on to coverage of the republican convention, including coverage of local reps. The reporter was asking a woman whether or not she thought McCain knew about Sarah Palin’s daughter before choosing her as VP. The woman responded with “Are you kidding me? Of course he knew. Does John McCain seem like a man who doesn’t know what’s going on?” (or something to that effect, anyway)
To which I would respond: um, yeah, actually he does seem like someone who doesn’t know what’s going on. Though, I wouldn’t draw those conclusions from his awareness (or unawareness) that a 17 year old might have been knocking boots with her boyfriend and that she might be preggers as a result.
Which actually brings me to another point on where McCain probably doesn’t think things through. If even “family values” candidates as abstinence only sex-education supporting and involved parents who teach their kids right with the fear of god and whatnot still face unplanned teenage pregnancies (one assumes this was unplanned) then why continue supporting abstinence-only sex ed, which clearly doesn’t work (and if it isn’t that intuitive for you, read this)? I want to be clear this isn’t a bash on Sarah Palin’s mothering skills or how fit she is to lead based on her kids, because seriously, how many 17 year olds aren’t knocking boots, regardless of upbringing? But the point is that there is an obvious disconnect with reality. As Senator Obama put it “McCain doesn’t get it”. I don’t think Governor Palin gets it either.

So true! McCain and Palin are pushing abstinence only "sex-ed" and obviously that doesn't work, because Palin's daughter is pregnant--assuming that she got abstinence-only (sorry, I throw up a little every time I say it) sex ed in Alaska...which she might have, but I'm not betting on it. That's not judging Palin as a mom, because we all know kids are going to do what they want to do (have sex!) regardless of how awesome, intelligent and understanding mom and dad are, or how stern and serious teachers are in telling you not to have sex while you're young. I'm judging abstinence-only education. It's just stupid. Everyone (okay, most people) wants to have sex. It's freaking inevitable. Just ask Palin's daughter (no offense to you Bristol, I had sex as a teen, too--but I used the pill--and my mom told me to tell her when I started having sex so she could take me to get the pill. She did. Thank you, mom!). McCain totally doesn't get it. If he did, he would see how withholding sex education and information churns out teen pregnancy numbers like crazy. Duh. ~Sara

Teen pregnancy, now that is not something Brand New! The fact that Sarah Palin's 17 yr old daughter is pregnant is upsetting to Republicans as well as Democrats I am sure. However, it has nothing to do with the fact that abstinance teaching is the only train of thought out there to prevent teen pregnancies. I'm sure this young lady regrets the decision she and her boyfriend made at such a young age and the impact it will have on their futures. Many a young couple have made it through a pregnancy many of which may have been our own mothers or grandmothers! So, before you stone her for her lack of control, examine your own past and make sure you were either a true virgin or just lucky you didn't get pregnant! This baby will live and be loved by their family and that is more important. Too many young girls are resorting to abortions for their birth control methods and that is NOT acceptable in my opinion or to those who are Pro Life!
