Francie Wood can do what no man can.

Francie gave birth to her third child in a birthing tub at home, without assistance of drugs or a midwife. Having practiced prenatal yoga, which she now teaches at Incognito, Francie was calm, preferring her New Age music and the Bradley Method to a hospital. She gave birth to Fiona within one hour of labor. She untangled the cord from around Fiona’s neck, and called out to her husband and mother in the living room: “The baby’s here!” Says Francie, “If more women thought of themselves as goddesses while giving birth, it would be a better experience for them,” and adds that she identifies most  with Artemis, the goddess of childbirth. At 10 years old, Francie watched relatives experience emergency cesareans and inductions, and thought it wasn’t the way birth was supposed to be. She wanted her own experience to be different. “I told my husband, ‘we’re not getting drugs. I can do this.’”
