36, wow that is a big number. Funny how I used to think anything over 30 was old. Now I have a 12 year old step-daughter and a 15 year old niece who think I AM OLD? What?? That can’t be. I don’t feel old. I don’t look old. I don’t have wrinkles, now I must admit I do have gray hair, well actually it is silver, but noone sees it because I am always coloring it. Right now it is PINK. But ME, OLD?? No way.
Just the other day, when I was dragged into the dreadful prison I call “the mall” with my niece, I watched in horror as she pointed out the leggings, the jelly bracelets and the day-glo clothes that she LOVED, the checkered converse she “has to have”... and I thought, “Wait a minute, I did that already, it was 1985 and I was in the 7th grade wearing day-glo and listening to Madonna’s Borderline on my boom-box surrounded by Prince and Micheal Jackson posters with scrawlings of Mrs. George Michaels all over the place (way wrong on that, by the way).
Now, I listen to what she likes, My Chemical Romance, System of a Down, Chiodos, The Gorillaz and the like. I enjoy their music, actually like some of the songs, but they are no Go-Go’s. no Madonna, no Air Supply or Journey, that is for sure.
I still remember laughing at my dad when he would sing “his music” and do his little dance in the kitchen (he was in his 30’s at that time).. and he listened to Motown (which I love to this day, it always brings me back to him singing and dancing in the kitchen) The Spinners, Hall and Oats, Stevie Wonder *my favorite*, Dionne Warwick, The Commodores *another fav*, the Temptations, Gladys Night and the Pips, The Four Seasons, Al Green and the end all, be all for my dad, *not Motown* The Carpenters.
When I think back at how I viewed 36, it is alot different from how I view it now. I wouldn’t change the horrible lace bow I wore in my hair EVERYDAY, or the fact that I bleached my auburn hair to a horrible Madonna blonde... or even the rainbow legwarmers I wore religiously after seeing Flashdance. I am older, wiser and more secure that I have ever been in my life.
My dad had it right, life is about enjoying what you love and singing and dancing in the kitchen while your children laugh and say you are old.
Because one day, they will be doing the same thing.

Well, Melodi, I will be joining your world of the "30's" very soon, sister. My 30th birthday is (too) fast approaching on August 28th...which is less than 6 months away...YIKES! Can I let go of my 20's??? My fabulous sister threw THE BEST 29th surprise birthday party for me last year...an 80's roller skating party...oh, yes!!! She probably figured when I turned 30, I would expect a surprise party...so, she did it for my 29th birthday instead...she is brilliant. And, not knowing it was actually "my" surprise party when we entered the skating rink, I fell for it and dressed up in a strapless, form-fitting, to the knee, zebra-print dress with red, patent leather heels, white lace glove, long, red and white beaded necklaces, very teased up hair and bangs (lots of hairspary) with bright red lipstick and abnoxious eye-shadow...can't you just picture it? I had the time of my life!!! At least I know I lived my 20's out to the fullest!!! Bring it on 30's!!!
