Sara Dougherty | Peacemaker

For ten months, Sara lived with the Kamba tribe in Kenya without running water and limited transportation. She spoke Kiswahili and ate mostly Chapati, a type of fried bread, and goat meat—all to educate herself and others about public health issues through the Peace Corps. Developing curriculums regarding hygiene and setting up mobile HIV/AIDS testing clinics were some of the challenges she triumphed with rudimentary resources. Unfortunately, due to the political turmoil and ensuing violence, Sara was forced to evacuate before serving for two years. The Jacksonville native desires to go back when the issues are resolved. “I’ve never been so warmly welcomed in a community,” she explains. “Being evacuated, I didn’t really get to say goodbye.” But the experience gave her a thirst for more travel among parts of Africa.  “You go to Africa and you’re completely out of your element,” she says. “And that challenges you.”
