Model Citizen

Thursday, May, 22, 2008

Is a great boutique in Ponte Vedra and San Marco, but that’s not what this entry is about.

“Model citizen” here is alluding to Whitney Thompson’s winning America’s Next Top Model in the “plus-size” category. Whitney is a gorgeous gal, no doubt about it, (and a sweetheart, to boot) and as a bonus, her achievement in winning this popular show is also a step in the right direction as far as the movement to represent “average-sized” women’s bodies in fashion spreads. At least, I can only hope.

Another cool thing about Whitney? She just happens to be from Atlantic Beach, Florida--right next to Jax Beach. Her father, in fact, is Chief of Police in Atlantic Beach. In the Jacksonville skirt!’s July edition, she’ll dish about her theme song, what she’s thinking about,  the words she lives by, and more.

Here’s a sneak peak at our photoshoot yesterday:

I totally need a stylist and makeup artist. Volunteers?

I was so excited to see Whitney win ANTM -- she's gorgeous, smart, funny, and not a toothpick of a girl. How awesome for you to get to meet her!

I was excited to see Whitney win. I watched the show for the first time a few weeks ago and had a hard time swallowing the fact that a size 10 is plus size. I know that for models, who are usually a 0 or 2, it is. But the words plus size are so negative. Whitney was by far the most beautiful woman on the show and I think most of us would rather look like her than a starving stick figure! I have to confess when I found out she won I texted one of my friends, "You go girl! Don't let the skinny b****s keep you down!"
Stylishly yours,

What fun for you! I was a stylist before becoming a teacher, (isn't that the NORMAL progression?)and would love to play hair and make-up over a bottle or three of wine. If you ever make it to G-town, holla! :) The fact that a size 10 is considered plus size makes me feel like the underside of a submarine. Thank God I'm too old to really give a eff (I was TRULY confused about whether to use "a" or 'an' there.....if you say it Southern, like uh, it works.) Oh well. Happy hour, here I come!

I think I'll have to take you up on that next time I'm in G-town! Haha, I was totally thinking is there an "an" there, or an "a"? ~Sara

I'm a Wardrobe Consultant who tries sometimes in vain, to teach women/girls that it is more important to live a healthy lifestyle rather than to just be thin. I felt encouraged when Whitney walked away with this coveted title. What did disturb me however, was the description that was printed in the media about her. I read she was a size 10. She was described as being either full-figured or a plus-size model. Since when did a size 10 become plus-size? I work with plus-size and full-figured women. These are women who generally fall into the size range of 16 on up. On the one hand, the media was saying yea, it's about time we recognize that average sized American women are beautiful and sexy. But in the back of their minds, what are they still really thinking? We've come a long way baby, but I'm afraid the media hasn't really caught up.
