Pregnancy slang

Tuesday, June, 10, 2008
Does it disturb anyone else that some people use the word “pop” to describe women giving birth? I heard someone (a woman, actually) on the radio this morning referring to Tori Spelling being “popped” by her doctor this past weekend to deliver her child (she had a c-section). Last time I checked, even though in being pregnant we might feel like we could pop (although I wouldn’t know), we’re not balloons. We’re human beings and labor hurts. So stop comparing us to popping balloons. It makes us sound inhuman and devalues the labor that goes into, well, labor. It’s also kind of violent.

It reminds me of the term some of my classmates in high school used in reference to zits....I'm grossed out now. I have two doodlebugs, and I never popped. I'm pooped, but that's totally different.
