What should I do in St. Augustine?

St._Aug.jpg

I’m sad to report that my time in Florida is now coming to an end.  Tuesday, August 12 will be my final day as the editorial intern at the Jacksonville skirt! office.  My parents are arriving tomorrow evening to vacation here and help me move back to Virginia on the 16th.  It is such an interesting find that I can desperately miss my parents after years of contemplating voodoo acts against them during my own reign of terror (1999-2005). Viewing the finish line of this experience is definitely bitter sweet.  I can’t wait to see my folks and show them the life that I’ve been living here in Jacksonville thanks to their support.  We will be vacationing in St. Augustine starting on Wednesday of next week.  I’ve decided that my Dad and I need to go see The Dark Night at the IMAX theatre and I most certainly want to go on the Ripley’s Ghost Tour one night while we are in town.  I chose St. Augustine for them because my mom is an artist by hobby and the place screams créer!!!!!!!  I would love some advice from anyone who can recommend places to go in St. Augustine.  Anything you can think of throw at me; restaurants, art galleries, shops, museums, tours, beaches, whatever is funky and fabulous.  Merci!

My favorite thing to do in St. Aug is walk the streets and peruse the shops. For my anniversary I stayed at the Bayfront Marin and ate dinner at The Reef. Make reservations! Also, I know you like antiquing and there are a bunch of cute shops with great finds. Fashion is fun at The Closet. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendi... ~Sara

Don't forget about the St. Augustine Lighthouse... it's haunted ya know. There is also Panama Hattie's for dinner, if you go on Wednesdays, it's all you can eat crab legs or my favorite is Thursdays, they have a 4 piece band of adorable older (60's-70's year old) playing Glen Miller favorites and the elderlies come down and dance, so much fun and the sauteéd calamari is to die for. Step off the beaten path and take your mom to the Rachel Thompson Gallery at 116 Seagrove Mainstreet in St. Augustine Beach. She may remember singer/songwriter Bobby Goldsboro whose hits included tearjerkers like "Honey," "See the Funny Little Clown," and "With Pen in Hand." He's an artist now and his work is on display at the Gallery until August 25. Be sure to check out the upstairs gallery while you're there. They have a wonderful selection of local art from some of the most talented artists in the area.

Hi Melissa, Since I am probably your parent's age and live in St. Augustine, I would suggest they bring you (since it is a little expensive) to Cafe Atlantico at the Beach. Paolo is the chef and owner and makes food that is absolutely wonderful! You will all appreciate it - especially the sea bass. Also visit Simple Gestures Art Gallery/Shop next to Gypsy Cab Company - Uncle Stevo and his wife Sue are wonderfully warm people and the gallery has lots of local artwork at very reasonable prices. Take a tour of Flagler College (the students are not back yet) and don't forget to just take a nice walk on the beach, collect shells, hold your Dad's hand and tell them how much they mean to you! Best of luck in your future and finding a job that is meaningful to you.
