He's So Original: Jeff Goldhagen

By SARA CONRAD
The Times-Union

Jeff Goldhagen stands up for kids and he has all the credentials to prove it.

As a pediatrician, professor of pediatrics and Chief of Division of Community Pediatrics the University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville, and Medical Director of Community PedsCare — the hospice care program for kids with life-threatening or life-limiting chronic conditions — Goldhagen is involved with building and running programs for children who are marginalized by social, environmental and health issues.

Initially trained as a pediatrician and in public health, Goldhagen knew from the beginning of his career that he wanted to combine his experience. So in addition to occasionally seeing children in the Community PedsCare and Cleft Lip/Palate programs, he works in program development, administration, education and research, to help children who don’t have access to health care. He is most passionate about children’s rights and integrating those into health practice.

One of Goldhagen’s favorite places to work is Africa; he lived in Ethiopia for five years. “It combines fantastic beauty and traditional culture … and it’s all human struggle,” he says.

He's So Original: Dale Casamatta

Dale Casamatta, associate professor of biology at the University of North Florida, has named 15 species. The first species he named was after the creator of Dungeons and Dragons, Gary Gygax.

His favorite species, though, is a parasite that lives on buffalo. It causes ants to go insane so they want to be eaten.

“I like that I get a chance to do something novel and get to explore things that no one else has explored before,” says the sci-fi and fantasy fan. “Once you name something, your name is with that until the end time.”

Dale originally planned on becoming a paleontologist, but the first time he worked with a microscope, he realized he was far more interested in mic–robes. This eventually led him to earn his doctorate, and he has now been teaching biology and micro-limnology (fresh water ecology) at UNF for five years.

“I really like evolution and understanding how things are related to each other; I’m very interested in how things came to be,” he said.

Dale grew up on Lake Erie, and now that he lives on the First Coast, he is particularly preoccupied with the St. Johns River. He is dedicated to monitoring the river’s algae levels and studying the effects that native plants might have on its nutrients.

He's So Original: Mark White

By SARA CONRAD

The Times-Union

Mark White is a man of many poses.

In quest of curing a broken heart, Mark traveled to Mexico five years ago for a dose of yoga boot camp. He then fell in love with yoga and founded MBody Yoga (a play on words for “embody”). White grew up in Saudi Arabia, where his father worked for an oil company, studied in Colorado for information technology, and always thought that he would be on the cover of Fortune 500. But he couldn’t be happier being featured in local magazines for his accomplishments in the yoga world, instead. “I knew I wanted to do it and help people,” he says. “It helps people look inside and not to be afraid — we ask people to ... come into their own power.”

Tommy Douglas

Tommy Douglas plays golf for the greater good.

Part of Tommy's avocation is giving back to the community. The president and owner of Douglas Insurance Services, Inc. developed his service skills by sitting on community boards, such as the Gator Bowl Board and the Baptist Health Foundation Board, while practicing his business ventures. His passion for golfing in addition to his volunteer goals led him to be named this year's tournament chairman for The Players Championship, where he has volunteered for a decade. Now he gets to help others while sticking close to his favorite sport. When Tommy isn't on the green or running his business, he is hunting or spending time with his wife and three children - one of whom will play golf at Jacksonville University and follow in his father's footsteps.

Favorite thing about reading skirt!?
I like how each issue profiles people in our community and ... the inspirational messages [are] a place where I think both men and women can find motivation and encouragement.

Best thing about wearing a skirt?
It's a chance for my wife to admire my legs for a change.

Tyler Morris bridges the gap

In seventh grade, Tyler had an epiphany on a mission trip working with the hearing impaired community: he thought sign language was the most beautiful language in the world. “It just struck me,” he says. “It’s not a language you listen to, but you’re able to watch whole sentences through a facial expression.” The 24-year-old marketing director for the Independent Living Resource Center of Northeast Florida teaches American Sign Language classes and practices community outreach. “When it comes to sign language, it’s important that there’s inclusion and that the person has equal access to communication. It’s important to make that individual feel comfortable,” he says. Obviously granted a talent for communicating, Tyler is also the vice president of membership of the American Advertising Federation and co-chair of the Mayor’s Disability Council. “The best thing about working with the hearing impaired community is bridging the communication gap.”

Favorite thing about reading skirt!: My sister and I have this unspoken Christmas competition when it comes to presents: I try to get her the most unique piece of jewelry every Christmas, and with skirt! it makes shopping for my sister easier because you get to see all that merchandise and the stores.

Aaron Gottlieb is greener than you.

We all try to pitch in for Earth Day, but Aaron takes it a step further. After graduating from Emory University , he was working in Atlanta and searching for a natural food store job in his hometown of Jacksonville . Finding not one, he started Native Sun in 1997 at 21 years old. As a grocer, he began to see how trash negatively affects the environment, so every decision in building Native Sun was intended to help consumers choose organic and cut down on pollution. Not one item in the store is genetically-modified, and in addition to recycling, the walls were built with energy-efficient, insulating Styrofoam and steel. Inspired by his decision to change his lifestyle for health reasons, Aaron now runs in local triathlons and organizes an annual local Earth Day festival. “We’re conscious of every decision we make; every time we do something, we know what the impact is,” he says.

Dr. Julius Demps, II was born to lead.

Teaching runs in Julius’s blood: his mother, dad, godfather, godmother, aunt and uncle were all teachers. His grandmother was the first teacher in Duval County to teach a desegregated classroom at Justina Road Elementary School . Julius is an Assistant Professor of Management and has worked at Jacksonville University for the past eight years. “Education has been my life. It’s the cornerstone of my existence,” he says. Teaching management, human resources, leadership and organizational behavior at the college level is his calling. Before working at JU, Julius spent six years as a middle school teacher, a challenging age group to teach, but one that came naturally to him, due to his ability to identify with almost anyone.

Joey Marchy scoops the urban scene.

Joey is the founder of Urban Jacksonville (urbanjacksonville.info), a “hyper-local” blog.  “I thought it would be fun…There was nothing really out there that talked about stuff below the mainstream that is still important to the neighborhood,” he says. “No one was doing reviews the way I wanted to read them—a little more informal.” Joey grew up in Jacksonville, went to UNF for computer programming, and spent a few years in Minneapolis with his wife before they returned to start a family. He currently works in web development at nGen Works and blogs when he isn’t spending time with his wife and three-year-old, Coleson. “It used to be that I would struggle to find things to write about when I first started blogging, but now I’m overwhelmed; there’s too much to write about, which is awesome. People are publishing, writing, organizing events, and throwing shows,” he says.

John Daigle has character.

After a brief stint writing for his high school newspaper, John, who now works at Principle Creative, served in the military and led a platoon in the Florida National Guard before returning to writing. He became the editor-in-chief of the Jacksonville Business Journal and The Florida Times-Union’s lead political reporter when he realized his intense curiosity in quirky political personalities. In 1995, he wrote a series of articles on the 75th anniversary of the women’s suffrage movement. “It gave me a lot of respect for what took place there,” he says. “I admire people who are willing to step out from the pack.” The former board member of Girls, Inc. is raising his two daughters with his wife, Renee. “I want my daughters to be proud of themselves for their minds; I don’t want them to focus on their looks as their source of self esteem,” he says.

Clifton Nehmer Intervenes

Clifton is the director of the First Step Batterers’ Intervention program at Hubbard House, where he educates domestic violence batterers on solutions and prevention. Clifton grew up in Wisconsin and served in the Navy Submarine Force for 10 years. He earned his master’s degree in pastoral counseling and completed a residency in Chicago on marriage and family therapy, which sparked his interest in domestic violence intervention. The father of three daughters worked at the Ohio Reformatory for Women, then moved to Florida and founded the Quigley House Batterers’ Intervention program in 1994 (which he is still the director for part-time). “By the time I got to Florida , I had some pretty strong views of equality,” he says.

Bob Thayer will hook you up with a gig.

It’s comforting to know people like Bob Thayer have a sense of goodwill. Bob began volunteering as a board member with Chicago’s Goodwill in 1985 and has been the CEO of Jacksonville’s Goodwill for the past thirteen years.  Fresh out of college, he worked as a math teacher and a basketball coach for seven years before making the switch to non-profit work.

“I’m a feminist because…women are emotionally stronger. Women deal with their feelings and that builds strength and character. A feminist is anyone who fights for the rights of women. My mother is very strong-willed and opinionated, but also supportive of everybody regardless of race or gender, and she has instilled that in me.”

“I’m a feminist because…women represent the largest single minority of whose rights are still unequal to those of men. Constitutionally, areas have taken great strides, but as far as the practical areas like pay equity, they haven’t. It’s difficult for many people to give up power and authority once they have it.”

Alain Raymond | Activist

“I’m a feminist because…basic rights should be provided to everyone. Women are still put in positions lower than men—not just in work, but in conversation. Feminism not only involves a woman’s rights, but a lot of things that people take for granted.”

James Richardson is a man in a girl’s world.

James is the first man to be president of the board of Jacksonville’s Girl Scouts of Gateway Council. He grew up as a boy scout, but was drawn recently to the impact that Girl Scouts had on the community. “Although there are many male volunteers at the troop levels, there weren’t many men supporting the organization at the board level,” he says.

Terrell M. Carr is a master mixer.

In high school, Terrell was mixing skin care solutions in his sink to create his own line of products. Now, at age 22, he owns Earthly Oasis, a line of natural skin care products born out of ingredients like shea butter, oatmeal, and honey. An all-around artist, Terrell also designs clothes and paints. “I’m free spirited,” he asserts, “I like to be my own leader.” However, he didn’t like chemistry in school. “I just wanted to start something on my own,” he explains.

Josh Klinger makes commuting fun.

There are not many passengers who can make the rush hour commute entertaining besides Josh, a.k.a. “Klinger” on rock station Planet Radio107.3. On his afternoon show, Road Rage, Klinger takes commuter complaints and steers drivers away from vengefully clipping taillights. Because he has such a “great gig,” Klinger never really has an awful day at work. He enjoys when listeners call in with their two cents, even if it’s unflattering.

Scott Wagner is a family man.
Scott Wagner started his practice Jacksonville Exceptional Dentistry in 2001 (www.jaxsmile.com).  Back then his life was all about work, surfing, golf, and playing guitar and harmonica in his band with his buddies from college. But four and half months ago his wife, Kate, gave birth to their son Austin, and now Scott’s lucky if he can get in a little shut-eye. But he’s not grumpy. Clients know him to sing along to Bob Dylan or Jimmy Buffett while he’s in the office. “Choose to be happy and pass it on!” is his motto.
