There’s no doubt that two-time Emmy Award-winning actress Heather Tom’s star is on the rise; her lengthy list of credits include film, television and Broadway. Her day job, playing Katie Logan on the daytime television series “The Bold and the Beautiful,” keeps her busy, but not so busy that she doesn’t have time to support the causes she believes in.

She’s So Skirt!: Heather Tom: Actress, feminist, athlete

By ALEIGH ACERNI
Special to the Times-Union

There’s no doubt that two-time Emmy Award-winning actress Heather Tom’s star is on the rise; her lengthy list of credits include film, television and Broadway. Her day job, playing Katie Logan on the daytime television series “The Bold and the Beautiful,” keeps her busy, but not so busy that she doesn’t have time to support the causes she believes in.

In 2003, Heather created Daytime for Planned Parenthood, a pro-choice committee. “Planned Parenthood is an organization that’s really near and dear to my heart,” she says. “It’s where I went to get my reproductive health care when I was a teenager, and it always felt like a safe place. I wanted to draw awareness to reproductive health through daytime [television].”

Heather’s efforts have an impact — she was invited to lobby Congress twice on behalf of Planned Parenthood, and her committee helps ensure that when daytime dramas present plots dealing with reproductive health issues, the information presented is accurate and informative.

Denise Brown

As she travels the country in her tireless efforts to “banish the darkness and end the silence” for those victimized by domestic violence, Denise Brown frequently shares her painful recollection of the day her sister, Nicole Brown Simpson, was murdered in 1994. “I knew nothing of domestic violence until this happened. If only I had known about the cycle that chipped away at her self-esteem. It can happen to anybody.” Nicole Simpson’s children are what remain of that day, and for Denise, they make it all so real. For 15 years, she has traveled the country to raise awareness about this pervasive crime that kills three women every day in the United States. “Domestic violence is hope that it will get better; shame that anyone will know; and fear of the unknown.”

Denise helped initiate The Vine System, an automated service that notifies victims of the release of batterers from prison. “It’s still a man’s world out there. To create social change, they need to be educated. We need good men to work with us.”

Lee Holifield is so skirt!

 By AMANDA TEW

The Times-Union

Lee Holifield’s husband was a little nervous when he received an e-mail asking if there was anything she needed to know before using an angle grinder, circular saw and framing nailer.

Using tools like these, Holifield has been doing home renovations for the past 15 years, sometimes with her husband and sometimes in his absence. “I’ve done everything from painting a room to the wiring, and hanging dry wall and putting in tile,” Holifield said.

In 2007, while Cmdr. Mike Holifield, a Navy lawyer, was stationed in Kabul, she purchased a home in Washington, D.C., for when he returned.

She's so skirt! Kim Wayans

Because her words cross cultures.

Because she gives a voice to young girls.

Because she’s not afraid to bare her soul.

She’s best known for the outrageous characters she’s played on shows like “In Living Color” and in the recent movie “Dance Flick.” But guests of the National Black Theatre Festival in Winston-Salem, N.C., saw a different side of Kim Wayans, “the real Kim, the woman behind the wacky characters,” she says.

Based on her journey of self-discovery after a spiritual retreat, “A Handsome Woman Retreats” examines the source of Wayan’s anxiety and her experiences as part of one of the funniest families in Hollywood. Inspired by her many nieces and nephews, Wayans and her husband launched the Amy Hodgepodge book series (amyhodgepodge.com), exploring issues multiracial kids face in today’s culture.

“They are the largest growing segment of the population, and we saw a void in children’s literature. We wanted to present characters our nieces and nephews could relate to,” Wayans says. “All children need a positive role model.”

Though she’s now working on a musical about the lives of three middle school-age girls, Kim hasn’t shut the door to more acting gigs.

She’s So skirt!

Shirley Budden took up golf after her marriage in 1972 for a practical reason: “I played with my husband, because I didn’t want to stay at home and be a golf widow.”

Now, she can’t get enough of the sport.

“He created a monster,” she jokes.

Although Budden used to play tennis, field hockey and volleyball in school in Argentina, where she attended a British boarding school, she now sticks with golf. She likes it because it allows her to play with others who aren’t necessarily as skilled as she is.

Budden has played all over the world and has been on national and international teams, including The New York Metropolitan Golf Association Team and the Hong Kong Golf Team, when she lived in Hong Kong for several years.

These days she golfs once a week at Sawgrass Country Club, enjoying the camaraderie she has developed with the other women at the club.

She says that golf comes easily to her, even though she doesn’t practice, to the chagrin of her competitors. She says her best score was a four or five under par.

Her advice to women who want to learn the game? “Be very patient,” she says. “It looks so easy, but wait until you start to do it.”

Profile: Melissa Butler

By SARA CONRAD

The Times-Union

What Melissa Butler likes most about playing rugby is the camaraderie.

“It’s an automatic group of friends,” says Melissa, the president of the only women’s rugby team in Jacksonville. “There’s a very big social aspect.”

Of course, there is the physical contact, too.

“We’re full-on tackle — the same rules as the men,” says Melissa. “It’s a very physical sport. … There’s definitely no need for stress management. Tackling definitely helps.”

“We always say: ‘blood, sweat and tears.’ ”

Melissa, 27, began playing rugby in college at the University of Central Florida with the encouragement of her friends on the men’s teams. She started the Jacksonville team in 2006 with the help of the established men’s rugby teams in town.

The team, known as the Sinners, is open to all women, even beginners and girls under age 18. They play other teams throughout Florida and Georgia.

Mary Pappas: Profile

By SARA CONRAD
The Times-Union

Mary Pappas wouldn’t call herself an athlete, but we will, because she’s been playing tennis for more than 40 years. In fact, it is through tennis that she helps raise money for breast cancer research.

Papas founded SenioRITAs 10 years ago, a doubles tennis tournament at Sawgrass Country Club for women over age 40. The tournament raises money for breast cancer research at the Mayo Clinic Jacksonville and at Baptist Medical Center Beaches (the “RITA” stands for Research Is The Answer) through the RITA Foundation.
Love is what brought Pappas to tennis initially. After marrying her husband, Peter, a serious tennis player, she began taking lessons so she could play with him. And while he has stopped playing, Pappas is still going strong.
“[Tennis is] not something that you achieve a level and stop. You keep going,” she says.

Before Pappas and her husband moved from New Jersey to Ponte Vedra Beach in 1995, she had played in a competitive tennis league and competitive paddle.

Kerry Fradley: My Life List

By SARA CONRAD/ The Florida Times-Union

“Singing feels good, and the voice is an amazing instrument we have for expressing our emotions,” says Kerry Fradley, the director of the North Florida Woman’s Chorale. “Through developing skills, learning teamwork and learning to produce clear, clean tones the group is able to produce a sound that is more wonderful than the work of the individuals.” Fradley also established and directs the St. Augustine Children’s Chorus and directs the Flagler College Singers. She earned her master’s degree in choral and vocal studies from Georgia State University and lived in Springfield, Va., for 25 years. There she developed her interest in art museums before moving to St. Augustine in 2003. Music runs in Fradley’s family, too; her father was a professional Christian singer, and one of her daughters is the choral music director at DeLand High School.

Blythe Brumleve: My second life list

Blythe Brumleve has always enjoyed sports and gaming. As a little girl, she also collected baseball cards and X-men cards — you know, hobbies that a lot of people consider to be “guy things.” But Brumleve has noticed that a lot of women actually enjoy things that some consider to be unnatural for her gender — they just wanted some representation on the Internet. So she created guysgirl.com, a Web site for women to gather, game, check out sport stats and chat. Very cool. Her favorite sports teams are the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Boston Red Sox, and she loves playing the “Tom Clancy Splinter Cell” video games as well as the good ol’ classics, “Zelda” and “Mario.” She also enjoys “girl stuff,” like collecting shells, shopping and reading.

4. Attend The Masters.

5. Go horseback riding on the beach.

Berrin Beasley: My second life list

Berrin Beasley, PhD, is an associate professor at the University of North Florida’s Department of Communication. She grew up on a farm in a rodeo family in Panama City. We’ve asked her to share her life list of goals with us.

Recently, I realized something important about myself: I’m old.

OK, maybe not old, just older, but definitely not young anymore. And I’m having a hard time making sense of this new older me. Just exactly who am I? And what do I want out of life … now?

As kids, our goals are pretty much set out for us by our parents and our society’s expectations: Go to college, get a degree, get a job, get married, have kids. Well, I’ve done that. All of it. Now what?

I’m facing a second life crisis, if you will, complete with a red Mustang convertible and a longing for the energy and optimism only youth can provide. But I don’t really want to be 18 again. I love my current life, and all the things I’ve accomplished so far. I just need a new set of goals that reflect this older, wiser me.

LIFE LIST

1. To dance. Any kind of dance. Anywhere. As long as it makes me feel alive again.

2. To write. For myself, for others, for the sheer pleasure of it.

Jacqueline Casey: I'm a feminist because ...

Jacqueline Casey
Strong-minded

“I’m a Feminist because ... According to the dictionary Funk and Wagnalls, the word “feminism” means a doctrine advocating the granting of the same social, political and economic rights to women as the ones granted to men.  I am a feminist because I believe all women should have choices that equate to the choices men receive.  My beliefs stem from the roots of the many women’s rights movements that gave women a chance to vote, go to college and have a solid place in the workforce.  Women have the ability to innovate, inspire, and above all to change the world.  I am a feminist because I always want to achieve more and believe all women have the chance to achieve anything they desire.  As the brilliant Eleanor Roosevelt once said, 'the future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.’ ”.

Jacqueline is a Jacksonville native and a senior at the University of North Florida majoring in education. She is a former dance major, which she thinks has helped her gain confidence and perseverance. She grew up surrounded by strong women in her family who always taught her to strive for more.

Ida Marie Jack: I'm a feminist because ...

Ida Marie Jack
Self-made Woman

“I’m a feminist because ... I no longer wanted to be the subservient woman who always settled for less, so I found a way to change who I was in order to fulfill my own desires.”

Ida describes herself as a product of the ’50s: perfectly molded to suit the man in her life. She says that like many women her age, it was instilled in her that women were brought into this world simply to serve men. She spent the first 30 years of her life doing just that until she learned that in order to fulfill her own dreams she had to change the man-made woman, which inspired her to start working on her new book of the same name. Ida is a songwriter, published author and an advocate for natural cures and health freedom.

Catherine DeAngelis: I'm a feminist because ...

Catherine DeAngelis
Freedom Seeker

I’m a feminist because ... I believe that women should have political, economic and social rights equal to those of men (Webster’s). I’ve lived through the ’60s, ’70s, drugs, sex, rock ’n’ roll, the pill, abortion, the changing face of AIDS, marriage, divorce and joyous grandchildren, and through it all I found me!

Catherine is 53 years old, single and loving it. The Jacksonville native believes that women don’t come into their own until their 50s. “The surprising part of being 50 is my newfound sense of freedom and my newfound sense of humor,” she said. She is always telling other women who are her age that by this time in their lives the men are either well trained or they’re gone, and the children are on their own. “We are finished doing all those other things, so we get to be ourselves,” she said. Catherine lived in Columbus, Ohio, for 27 years and moved back to Jacksonville five years ago to be closer to her family. When she isn’t working as an X-ray technician she makes jewelry or hones her talent in photography.

Christina Bruno | Voice of a Generation

“I’m a feminist because everyone needs to look up the definition of a feminist: According to Webster’s dictionary, ‘Feminism is the doctrine advocating social, political, and all other rights of women equal to those of men. ‘Webster’s dictionary is a feminist. So often people think a feminist is someone who burns bras and wears shirts that read ‘men drool and women rule’ and, yes, that is a radical feminist, but today a feminist is defined as someone who believes women deserve equal rights to men. Everyone should be a feminist: male or female! Whatever a man can do a woman do, and probably better and backward in high heels.”
Christina grew up in Fort Lauderdale and graduated with a political science, public administration degree from the University of North Florida. She is 23 years old and is the senior sales and marketing executive for ABC AM1320 WBOB News Talk and a sales executive for “The Promise” stations 88.1 FM Jacksonville and 91.9 FM St. Augustine. She also hosts The First Coast Showcase on Fridays on ABC AM1320 WBOB News Talk. She is especially touched by issues such as poverty, race and gender, which sparked her interest in politics. Christina worked on the 2008 presidential campaign on a local level and continues to volunteer on the First Tee of Jacksonville committee.

Ani DiFranco

By Jessica Leigh-Lebos

Special to the Times-Union and skirt! Savannah editor

It’s been 20 years since the Buffalo, N.Y., native released her first self-titled cassette on her own Right- eous Babe Records, and 19 albums later (including 2008’s “Red Letter Year”), Ani DiFranco has held fast to her do-it-yourself roots, signature staccato guitar style and fearless political stances.

“The personal is political,” the self-titled “little folksinger” reminds her audiences, and she has long championed reproductive freedom and GLBT rights from the stage as well as through her Righteous Babe Foundation. She admits her prolific song-writing has slowed since giving birth to her daughter, Petah Lucia, in 2007, but says the work of motherhood has only deepened her commitment to raising the consciousness of the culture.

Paulette McElwain, Visionary

Paulette is my Shero because she creates a supportive, even loving, atmosphere for patients at the Virginia League for Planned Parenthood, many of whom lack health insurance. After sending a nurse to "hold my hand" during my IUD placement, she distracted my boyfriend (who’d paled two shades in the waiting room) with a guided tour.
~Nominated by Joia Wood, Charlottesville , Va.

Spurred by the growing need for women’s health services, Paulette launched a $4.6 million campaign for VLPP’s new facility, opened last month at 201 N. Hamilton. “Access to affordable family planning often means, quite literally, the difference between a woman finishing college or not,” Paulette, VLPP’s President and CEO, notes.  On weekends she hits the Goochland countryside with her horse, Splash.

Paula Puopolo, Courageous

“Paula has such an amazing spirit. She was the whistle blower in the Tailhook scandal where she risked her career by taking on the military’s institution of male privilege. Not only did she break ground by ending the silence around sexual assault in the military, but rather than making her victory a personal one, she has worked in the community to create positive change.”
~Nominated by Jessica McCaffrey and Shelly Clay-Robison, Jacksonville, FL

Paula, a former US Navy helicopter pilot, founded Ocean Yoga in Atlantic Beach, where she is an Anusara Yoga instructor. She volunteer teaches a math program in her children’s school and coaches Girls on the Run. Her articles have been published in several magazines, including Glamour.

Sharon Elliott and Carrie Ferguson

When Sharon and Carrie’s weekly outings at a local coffee shop encouraged long conversations about their experiences through pregnancy and childbirth, they decided to write down their revelations. Those notes blossomed into their book, A Child’s Way: Slowing Down for Goodness Sake. Sharon and Carrie share success, backgrounds in education, and a knack for bargain hunting.

Sharon: Just as you are your child’s teacher, your child is your teacher. What if your child chose you to help you reach your potential?

Carrie: If it smells and looks like an opportunity, it’s not an opportunity unless you seize it. My mother taught me to do things organically; I jump started her with this book.
